Wordle - Question for Players

Do you have a go-to first word? I have been using AUDIO because it has 4 vowels. Curious about others' strategies.

Wordle - Question for Players

Guessing randomly -- starting with a new word each day -- feels to me like playing the lottery every day (don't) and choosing different numbers rather than playing the same ones each day.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I like "steam" because if I can get an S or a T pinned down that helps me a lot

Wordle - Question for Players

@Pixley Good idea. Meshes with @welshpixie 's BOATS plan.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully @Pixley Farts is another common one apparently :D

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully @Pixley @welshpixie I use STEAR or a permutation because when I was a kid a friend told me hangman should always start with e, r, s and t.

I actually use a different starter every day but I鈥檝e now run out of valid words made from those letters

Wordle - Question for Players

@dlek
I've been using TEARS.

re: Wordle - Question for Players

@scully mine's been LASER - two most used vowels in English with three of the top four consonants

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully Yes, I tend to start with ADORE, three vowels, and 2 common consonants. (audio is a good one though)

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully same but with AEGIS

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully mine's been SIEGE because i used it first once and now i can't think of anything else. AUDIO is incredible though!

Wordle - Question for Players

@finn Did you get SIEGE on first play when it was the word recently? That's cool.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully i eventually got SIEGE, after much trial and error

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I've been using different words. Mostly aiming to have as much of etaoins as possible in it. teams, nasty, steam, etc. Thinking of a new word is part of the fun.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I use Quail and Heart interchangeably.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I'm starting with steak - hits 4 of the most common letters on the first try. And as seen on the bird site today, steam is a good first guess too. Probably better actually as M is more common than K I think.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully
I never thought about it and just went with whatever I could come up with that had some rstlne letters. I also go with a completely different second guess sometimes even if I get a letter or two on the first one just this knock out more of the alphabet.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I actively prefer not trying to optimize the first words too hard because to me it has the same vibe as reading a gaming magazine to find the hidden rooms in Mario.

I do try to pick good first words, but I think it's more fun to do it on the fly. To each their own for sure though, I just find it more fun to make each one fresh.

@scully
GOATS and QUOTA are my go-to starter words.
I do try to switch my starter up, as to not inadvertently give other players who see my shared result a free first guess hint.

Wordle - Question for Players

@FiXato
GOATS and QUITE would be a good complement of vowels. Trying to think of a variation that doesn't repeat the T.
@scully

re: Wordle - Question for Players

@Tay0 CRUEL, but then you don't get the 'i'.
Could also use QUERY, so you get the Y instead of the I, but it's unlikely you'll get a first-word-guess with that now that it's recently been the word of the day. @scully

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I alternate between stare and stair depending on my mood.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully Yours has been sticking in my mind now though. I like how you confirm or eliminate all but the most common vowel with AUDIO.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I use a new word every day. It might not be optimal but using the same word every day some how seems less fun to me.

Optimising for vowels feels like you've resigned to not guessing it on first and instead play a five guess game with a clue.

And if you oneshot it's because they picked your word instead of you picking theirs..

Probably not the best strategy, but more whimsical and fun, to me 馃し鈥嶁檧锔忦煒勷煒

Wordle - Question for Players

@openess You have made an excellent point.

Once I decided to post my results it became a competition rather than a distraction and I am frustrated with myself for allowing myself to do that. If I hadn't allowed that to happen I would likely choose to guess the first word randomly, but instead, I feel like I must prove myself (I have a literature degree!) by getting it in as few guesses as possible and not simply just getting it.

I need to work on that.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully I didn't mean to say one way is better than the other. By all means let it be a fun competition between friends. It takes all my willpower not to post my score every day but I'm sure to check out how you all did.. I love the competition.

As a non-native speaker I find words with Q, U, Z or those types of letters probably take me the most guesses because they're not as commonly used in swedish . So far I've never not got it though 鈽猴笍

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully When just sounding out syllables trying to get the "best" word possible that also match my previous guesses my brain some how tries to make english words with swedish kinds of sounds.. It's a bit of a hardmode, but a fun twist when I catch myself doing it.

Wordle - Question for Players

@openess I didn't take your response that way. I just gave your response some thought along with the many other responses I got and it made me realise I had made the game more competitive with others than with myself.

Thank you!

I imagine that many of these games have challenges for non-native English speakers that I can't even imagine, and I am in awe.

Wordle - Question for Players

@scully i pick a different one depending on the day but usually go for something that'll check a couple vowels and maybe one common consonant
